The alert comes after a warning by the IB about attacks on seven possible terror targets in Maharashtra

Mumbai faces yet another security threat via sea. The city has been put on high alert despite rough weather conditions and flood-like situation. The alert comes after a warning by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) on seven possible terror targets in Maharashtra in one of the most serious threats the financial hub has received in the past two years. (Please Read Our Post Dt. June 22, 2009)

Despite the rough sea conditions, Pakistan-based extremists could carry out more 26/ 11 style attacks. Home Minister P Chidambaram reportedly confirmed the threat to Mumbai. The Navy and coast guard have been put on high alert.

The possible targets are key railway stations, shopping malls, luxury hotels and a reputed bank in Mumbai. Sources confirmed to Hardnews that photographs of these locations have been sent to security agencies after they were found from a terror suspect nabbed in J&K.

However, no reports have confirmed the number of terrorists that could enter India via sea and neither have they confirmed whether there is a possible local involvement or the possible timing of the attack. The threat is second of its kind in a month after a similar threat was issued on June 24.

The latest possible terror attacks on Mumbai come at a time when the entire city is battling a flood-like situation because of continuous rains. The Mithi river has crossed the danger mark.

Meanwhile, a top UN official monitoring the UN Security Council sanctions against various terrorist groups said that the LeT might target India again as it is trying to increase the tension between India and Pakistan. LeT was declared a terrorist organisation after it coordinated the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai.

Computerworld - NASA disclosed today that an investigation earlier this week that found multiple dings in the space shuttle Atlantis' heat shield must be restarted because about 40 tiles were missed.

The crew of the Atlantis had spent nine hours inspecting the heat shields on Tuesday. Using the shuttle's robotic arm, astronauts collected data and images of critical areas of the shuttle's thermal protection system, especially on the craft's nose and the edges of its wings. Part of a routine checkup after any shuttle launch, the inspection took up most of the crew's first full day in space.

A few hours after the inspection began, NASA announced that dings or scratches were found in some of the shuttle's outer tiles.

Scratches were found on the forward part of the shuttle's right wing, close to where it connects to the fuselage, according to NASA spokeswoman Katherine Trinidad. The damage, found on four different heat shield tiles, looks minor, but NASA will continue to investigate it.

The damage seems to be related to a debris impact that occurred about 104 seconds after the Atlantis lifted off Monday afternoon.

After today's spacewalk wrapped up late this afternoon, NASA announced that they have discovered that an area of the shuttle's heat shield had not been inspected at all. The area is below the forward thrusters on the vehicle's port nose.

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad city police is once again on alert after fresh inputs from intelligence agencies about a terror module operating in South India.

With Hyderabad being one of the main targets of terror elements, the city police have swung into action and are beefing up security. Though the alert did not point to Hyderabad being the target of the terror module, city police are not taking any chances. “It was a general alert by the intelligence agencies about the movement of a terror module in South India. Following the alert, we have intensified checks at all public places,’’ City Police Commissioner B Prasada Rao said.

Central security agencies have alerted the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the possibility of an terror strike on dams, particularly the Bhakra Nangal project, with the intent of creating economic destability in India. If the Bhakra Nangal Dam is broken, the damage would be enormous. Estimates show 1500 villages will be marooned and food production will be halted for the next 6 months. The loss of life and livestock would be very great.

This is why the terrorists want to re-enact a Mumbai type attack to show their 'presence' and to convey that they are active in India. Since 9/11 attack on the twin towers the strategies of terrorists have been innovative, like using the aircraft as a missile in New York and the London train attacks, and later in Nov 26 Mumbai.

This information about a possible terrrorist strike was intercepted from a mobile phone conversation between two Lashkar-e-Tayiba (LeT) operatives in Pakistan.Technical teams of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) have intercepted and analysed the conversation.

The government has received inputs from intelligence agencies suggesting that Pakistan-based terrorist groups could target top political leaders in the run up to and during the Lok Sabha elections.

Home Minster P Chidambaram said today that India was very uncomfortable with the present situation in Pakistan where it was hard to understand as to who was in control of the country.

Reviewing the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir state for the Lok Sabha elections, he said even political leaders would have to be very careful about their movement in the run-up to the elections. “I advise prudence on the part of political leaders while campaigning,” the Home Minister said, adding that there was no specific alert about a terrorist strike.

Jammu, March 18: Addressing the media in Jammu, Home Minister P Chidambaram said that security forces would be taking no chances during the elections, but at the same time asked leaders to move carefully during the polls.

He said that the state police has submitted a wish list to which he would respond as soon as he got back to the capital.

The space shuttle Discovery is arrived at Launch Pad on 15/01/2009 for its next space mission STS - 119 on 12/02/2009, we had received some specific instructions that the upcoming mission of Space Shuttle Discovery may have to face serious troubles while return back to Earth, the crew may face problem in Maneuvering the shuttle and it may have to land in unfrinedly conditions and may have to land at some new locations too... so NASA should give special instruction to the crew to prevent some disaster during the mission.

Shuttle Discovery will not launch before Feb. 19 as a result of lingering trouble with critical valves in the orbiter's main propulsion system. NASA program managers ordered the change-out after a gaseous hydrogen flow control valve failed to work properly during the launch last November of shuttle Endeavor.

Similar to pop-up lawn sprinklers, the poppet valves are critical to keeping pressure within the external tank's liquid hydrogen reservoir at proper levels as the shuttle is thundering toward orbit and propellant in the tank is fed into the orbiter's three main engines.

Pakistan earthquake kills at least 150

ISLAMABAD: A powerful earthquake jolted parts of southwestern Pakistan early Wednesday, leaving at least 150 people dead and hundreds more injured, officials said. The death toll was expected to rise.

The 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Quetta, the provincial capital of Baluchistan, and several districts of the province between 4:30 a.m. and 5:10 a.m Wednesday, causing widespread destruction, the state-run news agency reported.

An eight-seater aircraft owned by the Punjab government crashed near Ludhiana on Wednesday noon, killing both the pilots on board.

The crash took place at Jugiana, about 12 km from Ludhiana when the aircraft was trying to land at the Sahnewal airport on a routine flight, according to the preliminary eyewitness account by local villagers.

Capt Manjit Singh Khokhar and Capt Dalip Kataria, both experienced pilots, were killed as the plane suddenly lost height and caught fire soon after ploughing into a thick growth of trees on the premises of an abandoned factory at Jugiana village, barely 4 km short of the airport where the plane was to land.
